Overview: A Builders’ Lien is a legal right that protects suppliers of labour, materials, or services involved in construction or land improvement. Under Nova Scotia’s Builders’ Lien Act, lien holders can recover money owed from the property owner who benefited from the work, even without a direct contract with the owner. This session will deepen the understanding of the lien process, introduce key terminology, and guide participants through the necessary paperwork. Participants will learn about project holdbacks and how to identify the main parties involved in lien claims.

Learning Objectives:

Identify who can file a lien and what property it applies to

Understand holdbacks, construction trusts, and related obligations

Understand how to register, perfect, and remove liens
