Overview:

A fundamental and core skill necessary for the success of any construction professional is a sound knowledge of blueprint reading and plans interpretation. Whether you are involved in the construction career streams of project management, estimating or field supervision a knowledge of blueprint reading and plans interpretation is essential. Blueprints are the fundamental illustrative tool of the construction industry that are used by all construction process stakeholders whether they be designers, builders, owners or regulatory authorities to convey and communicate the technical information necessary to properly execute projects. This comprehensive two-day workshop course will provide the generalized skills required to read construction drawings of all major design disciplines including structural, civil, architectural, mechanical and electrical drawings. An understanding of how a three-dimensional object such as a building can be systematically represented as a series of two-dimensional drawings will be explained through practical and applied methodologies. The fundamental language of blueprint reading will be introduced through the discussion of line types, abbreviations and symbols. The interrelationship between the various design disciplines will be discussed and illustrated. The relationship between plans and specifications will be introduced and the use of both imperial and metric scale rules will be explained and demonstrated. Each student, using construction drawings from two local projects, will gain this understanding through practical group exercises. The various types of diagrammatic views will be explained including site plan view, plan view, elevation view, sectional view and schedule view.
